Introduce the Ten-Frame. Model filling the top row (5) and then adding to the bottom row for 6, 7, 8, 9, 10. Emphasize that a full top row always means "5".

The Cardinal Rule
Watch for students who finish counting but then say a different number when asked "How many total?". Practice the "Final Count Shout" to reinforce cardinality.
Visual Mapping
Encourage students to see "6" as "5 and 1". This builds the foundation for addition and place value later in the year.

Show a "broken" number line on the floor with missing numbers. Explain that our Bear Scout friends are lost because the path markers (numbers) are out of order or missing. We must fix them!

Use the Path Pioneers Slides. Introduce the number line as a "map". Practice jumping forward from different starting numbers (e.g., "Start at 3, jump forward 2"). Discuss "Before" and "After".

Bear Crawl Sequence (Brain Break)
Line students up. Have them "count off" in order, then sit down in sequence. Repeat while they move like bears to their desks.

Counting On
Focus on starting from numbers other than 1. This is a key kindergarten skill that prepares students for addition. "If we are at 4, what's the next step?"
Visual Direction
Reinforce that as we move to the right on the number line, the numbers get bigger (more bears!), and to the left they get smaller (fewer bears!).

Present two bears and two different piles of "berries". Ask: "Which bear is luckier? Which bear has more to eat?" Use visual estimation before counting.

Matching the Harvest (Instruction)
Use the Berry Big Slides. Model the "Matching Strategy": line up berries from two groups in pairs. If one group has berries left over, it is "More". If they match perfectly, they are "The Same".

Pretend to pick berries from high and low. Shake the "bucket" (wiggles) and then freeze when the teacher says "More!" or "Less!"

Language Matters
Focus heavily on the vocabulary. Use "Greater than" and "Less than" interchangeably with "More" and "Fewer" to build math literacy.
Visual Trap
Be careful with group layout! A spread-out group of 4 might look "bigger" than a tight group of 5. Remind scouts to count before they compare .
