This packet is designed to solidify and review key spelling rules (drop final -e, consonant doubling, -tch/ch, -dge/ge, and -ck/k/ke) and check mastery of 11 distinct suffixes. Students in Grades 4–6 often struggle with when to apply doubling or e-dropping rules because they rush through spelling equations. Use this quest to emphasize analytical spelling decisions.

Common Student Misconceptions

Over-doubling Consonants Students often double letters out of habit (e.g., spelling writer as writter). Emphasize that short vowels in 1-syllable words need double consonants to "protect" their sound, but long vowel sounds with silent e simply drop the e without doubling.

Confusing -ge and -dge Explain that the -d- in -dge acts as a buffer directly after a short vowel (e.g., bridge, badge), whereas long vowels or consonants are followed by a simple -ge (e.g., cage, hinge, charge).

Differentiation Guide
