The Secret World of Pushes and Pulls

Think about a soccer ball resting quietly on the grass. It will not move on its own. But the instant your foot kicks it, the ball flies into the air! That kick is a force. In science, a force is simply a push or a pull that acts on an object. We use forces every day: pulling open a heavy door, pushing a playground swing, or squeezing a ball of clay.

Many forces happen when objects touch. These are called contact forces. When you kick a ball, your foot must make contact with it to push it. But contact is a two-way street! When objects touch, they always push back on each other. When you push down on a bouncy mattress, the mattress pushes back up against your hand. If you lean your shoulder against a heavy wall, the wall pushes back against you with the exact same strength!

The Push-Back Principle: When two objects touch, they exert forces on each other in opposite directions. You cannot push something without it pushing back on you!

If objects are constantly pushing and pulling on each other, why isn't everything constantly flying around? Consider a heavy book resting on your school desk. Even though the book is perfectly still, it has multiple invisible forces acting on it.

First, the force of gravity is constantly pulling the book downward toward the center of the Earth. If gravity were the only force, the book would fall straight through the air. Why doesn't it? Because the flat surface of the desk is pushing upward on the book! This upward push perfectly matches gravity's downward pull. Since these two forces are equal in strength but opposite in direction, they are balanced forces. They add up to a zero net force, keeping the book completely at rest.

To change an object's motion, you need an unbalanced force. This occurs when one push or pull is stronger than the others. An unbalanced force is a trigger. The size and direction of this trigger determine exactly what happens. A tiny tap triggers a slow roll, while a mighty kick triggers a fast flight. Friction from the grass acts as a pulling force in the opposite direction, triggering the ball to slow down and stop.

Case 1 A student leans heavily against a brick wall. Describe the contact forces acting between the student and the wall. What would happen if the wall did not push back?

Case 2 A glass of milk sits perfectly still on a kitchen table. Identify the forces acting on the glass. Explain how these forces result in a "zero net force."

Case 3 A skateboard is rolling smoothly on a sidewalk. Predict what happens to its motion if: (A) a heavy gust of wind blows directly against it, and (B) it rolls onto deep, thick grass. Explain the specific force triggering each effect.

Case 4 Two dogs are playing tug-of-war with a toy rope. First, the rope does not move at all. Then, the larger dog pulls much harder, and the toy moves to the right. Explain the forces in both parts of this game and why the rope's motion changed.
