1 Grammatical Voice vs. Cognitive Filter

Point of View (POV)

The grammatical stance of the narrator, identifying who is speaking using pronoun constraints.

1st Person: Narrator is inside the action. Pronouns: I, we, my.

3rd Person: Narrator is outside the action. Pronouns: he, she, they.

Perspective (Subjectivity)

The psychological filter through which a narrator perceives, interprets, and communicates events.

Determined by identity, bias, motivation, and context.

"Narrative style and reliability are born where grammatical POV and character perspective intersect."

2 The Three Lenses of Subjectivity (Cognitive Filters)

High school ELA analysis requires examining how an author uses these three filters to create an unreliable narrator.

1. EMOTIONAL DISTORTION

Internal State

Immediate psychological states (like terror, jealousy, or rage) corrupt objective sensory intake. A narrator experiencing severe panic may mistake an ordinary mechanical shadow for an a_ p_ _a_ _i_ _i_ _n.

2. EXPERT BIAS & BACKGROUND

Prior Experience

Lived history determines what a narrator focuses on. A scientific mind observes a structure's rust and attributes a noise to gear slippage and mechanical e_ _c_ n_ _r_ _i_ _y, ignoring human elements.

3. AGENDAS & OMISSIONS

Implicit Motivation

What does the narrator want to occur? Self-preservation or a desire for drama leads narrators to emphasize specific sensory details while they completely d_ _w_ _p_ _a_ or omit counter-evidence.

3 High School Analytical Tools: Textual Signposts

A. Lexical Diction & Style: How do tone words reveal psychological states? (e.g., Silas's gothic phrasing vs. Finch's clinical pedantry).

B. Selectivity & Omissions: What elements of the objective reality are completely silenced by a specific narrator's filter?

C. Narrative Distance: How close is the narrator to the emotional core of the scene? (Is it immediate/visceral or retrospective/cold?)

D. Subtextual Irony: Where does the reader's broader understanding surpass the narrator's narrow perspective, creating irony?
