1. Parallelograms

"Cut the triangle off the left, slide to the right to build a Rectangle!"

Formula Area = b × h

Find the Right Angle (⊥): Height must be straight up and down, never slanted!

Identify dimensions: Measure the horizontal Base and perpendicular Height.

2. Triangles

"Every Triangle is exactly HALF of a Parallelogram!"

Formula Area = ½ b h or \(\frac{b \times h}{2}\)

Multiply Base × Height: Compute the area of the full bounding parallelogram.

Divide by 2: Cut that result in half because a triangle only fills 50% of it.

Watch Out for Slant Heights!

The height must form a perfect 90-degree right angle with the base. Never use the diagonal, slanted side of a triangle or parallelogram to calculate area! Look for the dotted square indicator.

Example Walkthrough

Find Triangle Area: b = 8 cm, h = 5 cm

STEP 1 \(A = \frac{b \times h}{2}\)

The Split-and-Solve Method

Shape A (Rectangle)

Area = l × w
Area = 4 cm × 4 cm = 16 cm²

Shape B (Rectangle)

Area = l × w
Area = 10 cm × 4 cm = 40 cm²

Total Area

16 + 40 = 56 cm²

STEP 1

SLICE

Draw a dashed line to slice the irregular shape into simple rectangles.

STEP 2

DETECT

Find missing sides by comparing opposite known parallel lines.

STEP 3

SOLVE

Calculate the area of each individual section independently.

STEP 4

SUM

Add all the areas together to get the final total composite area.

Pro-Tip for Missing Dimensions

Think of it like a puzzle. If a full left side is 8 cm, and a right segment is 4 cm, the remaining vertical line must make up the difference: 8 - 4 = 4 cm. Always double-check matching opposite parallel lines!

Standard Concept: Packing Unit Cubes

How many small unit cubes with edge lengths of ¼ inch fit inside our prism?

• Along Length (\(5\frac{1}{2}\) in): 22 cubes

• Along Width (\(2\) in): 8 cubes

• Along Height (\(3\frac{1}{4}\) in): 13 cubes

A. Total Cubes packed: \(22 \times 8 \times 13 = \mathbf{2,288 \text{ Cubes}}\)

B. Volume of ONE unit cube: \(\frac{1}{4} \times \frac{1}{4} \times \frac{1}{4} = \mathbf{\frac{1}{64} \text{ in}^3}\)

C. Multiply (Cubes × Cube Volume): \(2,288 \times \frac{1}{64} = \frac{2288}{64} = \) 35 ¾ in³
