The Citizens of Athens

Part 1: The Men

In ancient Athens, being a citizen was the highest honor and carried the most responsibility. However, this status was exclusive. To be a citizen, a person had to be a free man, at least 18 years old, and born to Athenian parents.

Rights and Duties

Citizens were the only people who could participate in the government. They had the right to vote in the Assembly, serve on huge juries, and be elected to public office. They also had the unique right to own land in the city-state.

With these rights came heavy duties. All citizens were expected to serve in the military during times of war. Richer citizens were also expected to pay for public services, like building a new warship (a trireme) or funding a theater production.

"My day begins at sunrise. I spent the morning at my workshop, overseeing two slaves who help me spin the clay for wine jugs. At noon, I walked to the Pnyx hill for the Assembly meeting. We debated whether to increase the tax on grain imports. I cast my vote with a bronze token. Tomorrow, I must report for training with my shield. It is a busy life, but it is my city."

Only 10-15% of the total population were citizens.
Citizens served as "hoplites" (heavily armed foot soldiers).
All citizens were equal before the law.
Juries were massive, sometimes with 501 citizens.

The Women of Athens

Part 2: The Household

Life for women in Athens was very different from life for men. While women were technically considered members of the community, they were not citizens and had almost no political rights.

Domestic Life

A woman's place was considered to be inside the home, or the oikos. They were always under the legal control of a male relative. They could not own property, vote, or attend the Assembly.

Despite these restrictions, women held a very important role: managing the household. They supervised the slaves, managed the family’s finances, and were responsible for spinning wool and weaving clothes for the entire family.

"I rarely leave our home, except for religious festivals. My morning is spent in the gynaikon, where I work the loom with my daughters and our household slaves. Today, I am counting our stores of olive oil and dried figs to ensure we have enough for the winter. My husband Ariston is often away, but here, within these walls, I am the one who ensures our family survives."

Controlled the daily spending and household budget.

The Metics of Athens

Part 3: The Resident Aliens

Not everyone living in Athens was an Athenian. A significant group of people called metics were foreigners who had moved to Athens from other city-states or countries.

Economic Power

Metics were crucial to the Athenian economy. They were often skilled craftsmen, traders, or wealthy merchants. Many of the most famous thinkers and doctors in Athens were actually metics.

However, metics were not allowed to vote or hold public office. They were also forbidden from owning land—they had to rent where they lived. To live in Athens, they had to pay a special tax called the metoikion.

"I am from Corinth, but I have lived in Athens for twenty years. My trading business brings purple dye from Phoenicia to the port. I pay my taxes faithfully and have fought twice in the navy. Yet, I can never own the house I live in, and I cannot speak in the Assembly. Still, Athens is the center of trade, and there is no better place for business."

Metic Status

Paid a special monthly tax for the right to live in the city.
Dominant in trade, banking, and professional skills.
Forbidden from owning land or voting.
Required to serve in the army or navy during war.

The Slaves of Athens

Part 4: The Unfree

Slavery was a fundamental part of life in ancient Athens. It is estimated that between 1/4 and 1/3 of the total population were enslaved people. Most were non-Greeks captured in war.

Varied Conditions

Legally, slaves were property with no rights. However, their daily lives varied greatly. Household slaves often lived with families and performed chores.

Skilled slaves worked as craftsmen or managers. At the bottom were those who worked in the silver mines, where conditions were brutal. Some public slaves even served as the city's police force.

"I was brought here from Phoenicia. My master recognized I was good with numbers, so he put me to work in his bank. I manage accounts and oversee other clerks. I am technically 'property,' but I have saved money to perhaps buy my freedom. Many of my brothers toil in the dark mines or hot fields from dawn to dusk."

Labor Roles

Household servants, cooks, and tutors.
Manual laborers in agriculture and mining.
Public slaves served as city clerks and police.
Skilled workers in pottery and weapon-making.

Historical Note

Slaves could sometimes be freed by their masters and would then become metics.
