Introduce the "Building Metaphor" using Slide 2. Explain that a weak argument is like a house built on sand. Show students two isolated, choppy sentences (e.g., "The weather is very hot." and "People stay inside.") and model combining them using because and since. Have students practice combining simple pairs in real-time.

Phase 2: The Blueprint (Guided Instruction)

Present the "Blueprint Paragraph Structure" (Slide 3):
1. Foundation: Claim | 2. Pillars: Text Evidence | 3. Roof: Reasoning. Demonstrate how a "Pillar" (quote) cannot stand alone; it requires cohesive mortar (sentence transition phrases like According to the text, ... or This demonstrates that...).

Phase 3: Co-Drafting & Mortar Work (Guided Practice)

Work as a whole group to draft an argument. Provide a raw quote: "Forests cover 31% of land." and a weak claim: "Trees are important." Model combining these thoughts. Show how adding subordinating conjunctions makes the claim feel unified and complex: "Because forests cover 31% of the earth's land, preserving trees is crucial for our global survival."

Collaborative & Independent Assembly (25 Mins)

Distribute the Argument Builders Worksheet. Students work in pairs to analyze a small informational text card about animal adaptations or city parks. They must combine choppy evidence sentences into structurally strong statements.

Peer Review Step: Pairs trade worksheets and check their partner's structure against the "Mortar Test" (Did they use a transition word? Is there a subordinating conjunction?).
Independent Step: Students independently draft their final architectural paragraph on Page 2 of the Worksheet.

ESL Differentiation Blueprints

Emerging (WIDA 1-2)

Provide sentence starters with built-in conjunctions.
"Although some people think [X], the text says [Y] because..." Provide cut-out physical sentence puzzle pieces.

Developing (WIDA 3)

Provide conjunction bank (while, since, although, unless) and a 3-part blueprint graphic organizer. Require students to select and apply at least 2 distinct conjunctions.

Expanding (WIDA 4+)

Require students to write a counter-claim and refute it using concession conjunctions (whereas, nevertheless). Students self-assess sentence variety.

Common Structural Pitfalls (Teacher Warnings)

The Floating Quote: Dropping text evidence into the paragraph with no introduction (e.g., "The weather is bad. 'Global temperatures rose'..."). Fix: Enforce the "Claim-Connector-Evidence" template.
Conjunction Overload: Creating run-on sentences with multiple conjunctions (e.g., "Because the air was warm so animals ran but they were fast."). Fix: Model the "One Conjunction per Complex Sentence" rule.

Formative Assessment (10 Mins)

Distribute the Sentence Construction Exit Ticket. This scaffolded formative assessment evaluates whether students can identify fragment errors and combine simple ideas under test conditions. Grade this using the rapid rubric included on the ticket.
