Objective

Students will understand and explain that properties belonging to a category of two-dimensional figures also belong to all subcategories of that category using hierarchical reasoning.

Intervention Focus

Conceptual Bridge: Moving from seeing shapes as isolated "types" to seeing them as members of families.
Language Support: Using "Always, Sometimes, Never" to articulate geometric relationships.
Scaffolded Logic: Starting with the parent category's rules and testing them on subcategories.

Property Power Cards (Cut & Sort)
Geoboards or Rulers (Optional)

Facilitation Path

The "Inheritance" Hook (5 mins)

Say: "Think about your family. Maybe everyone in your family has brown eyes. If you are in that family, you 'inherit' that trait. Shapes work the same way! If a 'Parent' category has a rule, every 'Child' subcategory MUST follow it."

Show Slide 2: The Quadrilateral Family Tree.

The Rule Test (10 mins)

Use the Property Power Cards. Pick a 'Parent' property (e.g., "Opposite sides are parallel").

Ask: "Does a Parallelogram have this? Yes. Now, look at a Rectangle. Is a Rectangle a type of Parallelogram? Yes. So, DOES it have to have opposite sides parallel?" (Emphasize the must).

Always, Sometimes, Never Reasoning (10 mins)

Guide students through the Shape Detective Worksheet. Use the "Upward/Downward" logic:

Always: When moving from category to subcategory (A square is ALWAYS a rectangle).
Sometimes: When moving sideways or specific (A rectangle is SOMETIMES a square).
Never: When definitions conflict (A trapezoid is NEVER a circle).

Property Power Cards

Teacher: Cut these cards for students to use during the "Rule Test" activity.

Opposite sides are parallel

4 Right Angles (90°)

All 4 sides are congruent (equal)

Close figure with 4 sides

At least one pair of parallel sides

Opposite angles are equal

Check for Understanding Questions:

"If I tell you a shape is a rectangle, does it HAVE to have the '4 Right Angles' card?"
"If a square is a subcategory of a rhombus, which Rhombus cards must a square also have?"
