Magic E Duel Guide
Magic E Duel
Teacher & Student Guide
Learning Objective
Students will identify, read, and categorize 1st-grade level VCE (Magic E) words by matching vowel sounds and colors in a competitive card game format.
Game Setup
Materials Needed:
- Magic E Duel Card Deck (Printed and Cut)
- 2–4 Players
- "Magic E" Wand (optional pointer)
The Deal:
Shuffle the deck. Deal 5 cards to each player. Place the remaining cards face down (Draw Pile). Flip the top card to start the Discard Pile.
How to Play
1
On your turn, match a card from your hand to the top of the discard pile by Color or Vowel Sound (A, I, O, U).
2
Crucial Rule: You MUST read the word out loud when you play it! If you can't read it, a friend can help, but you must repeat it.
3
If you don't have a match, draw one card. If it matches, you can play it. Otherwise, your turn ends.
4
When you have only ONE card left, you must shout "MAGIC E!" before someone else notices.
Action Cards
Reverse

Skip

Teacher Tips for First Grade
- • Small Groups: Start with groups of 2 or 3 to keep the game fast and reduce waiting time.
- • Scaffolding: Encourage students to "tap" the sounds (c-a-k-e) if they get stuck. Remind them that the "e" is quiet but makes the vowel talk!
- • Visual Cues: The cards include a large vowel letter in the center to help students match sounds even if they struggle with the specific word.
- • Word Meanings: Occasionally ask students to use the word in a sentence to check for comprehension beyond just decoding.
