Draw a large number line (0-20) on the whiteboard. Invite a student to stand at "0".Prompt: "Jump to 5!" (Student moves). "Now jump 3 more!"Discussion: "Where did you land? How did you know to go forward? Did we add or subtract?"
2. Video Analysis (10 Min)
Watch Longer and Shorter with Monkeys Tico & Mario . Use the following pauses:
[0:30] Pause after rope comparison. Ask: "How did they find the difference? What math operation was used?" (Subtraction).
[1:06] Pause before answer. Ask: "Mario's boat is 9ft, Tico's is 5ft. How much longer is Mario's? Show me on your fingers!"
[2:30] Papaya Scene. Discuss the unit change (ft to in) and operation change. "Why are we adding now?" (Combining parts into a whole).
3. Number Line Journey (20 Min)
Distribute the worksheet. Remind students to:

Start at the first number.
