The Silent Howl

In the swampy forests of eastern North Carolina, a rare sound occasionally drifts through the pines: the long, haunting howl of the red wolf (Canis rufus). Once roaming across the entire southeastern United States, these unique predators are now found in only one place in the wild—a five-county area in North Carolina.

Red wolves are social animals that live in small family groups called packs. Unfortunately, the red wolf is one of the most endangered mammals in the world. By the 1980s, their population had dropped so low due to hunting and habitat loss that they were declared extinct in the wild. Scientists had to step in, breeding them in captivity and carefully releasing them back into North Carolina's Alligator River National Wildlife Refuge.

Today, red wolves face two main "Double Dangers." First, habitat loss continues as forests are cleared for development. Second, human activity, such as accidental collisions with vehicles, remains a major threat. Currently, only about 20 to 25 red wolves are estimated to live in the wild in North Carolina.

Tidal Travelers

Every summer, along the beaches of the North Carolina Outer Banks, a slow-motion miracle occurs. Giant female sea turtles—mostly Loggerheads—crawl out of the Atlantic Ocean to lay their eggs in the sand. These ancient reptiles have been visiting North Carolina shores for millions of years, but today, their journey is more dangerous than ever.

Sea turtles face a variety of threats that have landed them on the endangered species list. Like the red wolf, sea turtles suffer from habitat loss. As more hotels and homes are built along the coastline, the beaches where they nest become smaller. Bright lights from coastal buildings also confuse hatchlings, which use the natural glow of the moon on the water to find their way to the sea.

Conservationists work tirelessly to protect these "Tidal Travelers." Volunteers patrol beaches at dawn to mark nests with tape and signs. They also educate the public about turning off lights during nesting season. Despite these efforts, pollution and boat strikes continue to harm the population, making every nest critical.
