Passage 1: A Brave Seat in Greensboro

In 1960, the rules in many parts of the South were unfair. Public places like restaurants and movie theaters were segregated, meaning Black people and White people were forced to stay apart. In Greensboro, North Carolina, the Woolworth’s department store had a large lunch counter. White customers could sit on comfortable stools and eat, but Black customers were only allowed to stand and eat in a small area at the end of the counter.

On February 1, four college students—Ezell Blair Jr., Franklin McCain, Joseph McNeil, and David Richmond—decided they had seen enough. They walked into Woolworth’s, bought a few small items, and then sat down at the "whites-only" lunch counter. When the waitress asked them to leave, they politely refused. They stayed in their seats until the store closed that evening.

This small act of bravery was not just about a sandwich. News of the "sit-in" spread quickly through newspapers and television. The next day, more than twenty students joined them. By the end of the week, hundreds of people were participating. The Greensboro Sit-ins sparked a huge movement across the country, showing that peaceful protest could challenge unfair laws and lead to real change.

Passage 2: The Royal Ice Cream Protest

While the Greensboro Sit-ins are very famous, another important protest happened three years earlier in Durham, North Carolina. In 1957, a group of seven young people led by Reverend Douglas Moore entered the Royal Ice Cream Parlor. Like many businesses at the time, the parlor had a partition wall that separated Black and White customers.

The group, known as the "Royal Seven," walked past the partition and sat in the "whites-only" section. They were asked to move, but they refused to leave their seats. Eventually, they were arrested for trespassing and fined in court. Although they lost their court case at the time, their actions were incredibly important.

The Royal Ice Cream protest was one of the first times people in North Carolina used a sit-in to challenge segregation in a private business. It paved the way for future protests, like the one in Greensboro. This earlier event reminds us that the fight for civil rights was built on many smaller, courageous acts that happened in local communities long before they made national headlines.
