The Talk Shift

Protocol 1: Structured Partner Talk (Turn-and-Talk)

Replaces unstructured chat with rigorous, text-driven peer discussion. Perfect for deep comprehension questions during CKLA read-alouds or close-reading sessions.

Student Behavioral Success Criteria

1. Cue (10s)

Pose a text-dependent prompt. Identify Partner A/B roles. "Partner A speaks first; Partner B listens."

Knee-to-knee, eye-to-eye setup. Hands flat on desk, eyes on text.

2. Speak (45s)

Start a visual timer. Circulate with active clipboard. Scan for participation, capture strong thoughts.

Partner A speaks using sentence starters. Partner B tracks with eyes and nods.

3. Reverse (45s)

Signal immediate role switch. "Switch! Partner B speaks, Partner A paraphrases first."

Partner B speaks. Partner A actively tracks and listens.

4. Call (30s)

Count down 3-2-1. Cold call 2 students using randomized stick or tracker. "What did your partner say?"

Instant transition to tracking teacher. No speaking. Ready to respond.

Protocol 2: Rapid-Response Whiteboard Showdowns

Provides instantaneous formative assessment data while maintaining 100% student engagement. Use during CKLA spelling, grammar, or reading comprehension checks.

1 Draft & Guard

Pose a question. Students write on their dry-erase board while covering their work with a non-writing hand to prevent copying.

2 The Showdown

On the cue "3, 2, 1, SHOW!" every student lifts their board chest-high. No shouting out, no early reveals.

3 Feedback Scan

Scan the room. Narrate accurate patterns. Guide self-correction on boards before erasing. Target students for immediate follow-up.

Behavioral Safeguards for Low-Stress Execution

Zero-Noise Erasure: Establish a cue where whiteboard markers are capped and placed on the desk flatly before discussion starts.
Proactive Scanning: Stand at the perimeter to spot off-task shifts immediately. Call on positive behaviors explicitly: "Table 3 transitioned in 2 seconds. Excellent alignment."

Cooperative Learning Role Badges

Cut-out cards to hold students accountable during CKLA small group work

Grades 4-6

Directions: Photocopy this sheet, cut out the cards, and put them in cardholders or on lanyards. Instruct students to wear their badge and use their role-specific verbal stems during group assignments.

Role A SCRIBE

My Responsibility:

I synthesize group ideas and write down our final consensus onto the shared deliverable.

My Talk Stems:

• "So our consensus on this question is..."

• "How do you want me to write down your idea?"

• "Let me read back what I wrote to check if it's correct."

Role B TRACKER

My Responsibility:

I challenge the group to find evidence. I keep my finger in the text and locate supporting page numbers.

My Talk Stems:

• "Where in the chapter does it prove that?"

• "On page ___, I found this text evidence..."

• "Let's read this paragraph together to confirm."

Role C FACILITATOR

My Responsibility:

I read the prompts out loud, monitor our group's timer, and ensure that every single voice has shared.

My Talk Stems:

• "We need to hear from you next. What is your take?"

• "We have 2 minutes left, let's keep moving."

• "Let's read the prompt out loud again to stay on track."

Role D SKEPTIC

My Responsibility:

I push the team's thinking by questioning conclusions and highlighting other possible interpretations.

My Talk Stems:

• "Is there another way we could explain this?"

• "I agree, but what about this counter-evidence?"

• "Are we sure about that? What if the character actually meant..."
