Part 1: Investigatory Role-Play

To build social-emotional skills like perseverance and collaboration, present these scenarios to pairs during the Root Hunters activity. Have students act out the short scripts before starting their calculations.

Scenario A: The Frustrated Mathematician Topic: Resilience

Character Roles: Agent Grit (Positive) and Agent Quit (Frustrated).

Agent Quit: "This is my second synthetic division attempt and the remainder is 24! I'm done. We're never finding the zero. It's probably not even rational."

Agent Grit: "Don't abandon the scene yet! The video showed us it took three tries for them. Every 'fail' is just crossing one more suspect off the list. Check your signs and let's try \(x = 3\) next."

Discussion Point: Why is "failure" in synthetic division actually progress? (Answer: It narrows down the search field).

Scenario B: The Order of Operations Topic: Precision (p/q)

Character Roles: The Rookie (Confused) and The Veteran (Systematic).

The Rookie: "Okay, \(p\) is the leading coefficient, right? So I put the first number on top of the fraction?"

The Veteran: "Negative. Common rookie mistake. The constant (last number) is our \(p\). It's the 'root' of the tree, keeping the function grounded. If we swap them, we'll be hunting for suspects that don't exist!"

Discussion Point: How can we use a mnemonic to remember that \(p\) is the Constant (the end) and \(q\) is the Lead (the start)?

Part 2: Facilitation Tips

Activity Management

1. Pairing: Pair students with varying levels of computational speed to ensure "Agent Grit" roles are balanced.
2. The Reveal: If a pair finds the root early, challenge them to find the "depressed polynomial" and factor the remaining quadratic.
3. Mental Math: Encourage students to "peek" ahead. If the first multiplication in synthetic division makes the numbers explode (e.g., reaching 100+), they can stop early and pivot.

Questioning Strategies

"You just got a remainder of 15. What does that tell you about the graph of the function at that point?"
"If you know \(x = -3\) is a root, how would you write that as a factor if you were building a wall with blocks?"
"Why does the Rational Root Theorem only give us rational candidates? What about square root zeros?"

Correctly identifies \(p\) (constant) and \(q\) (lead).

Sets up synthetic division structure accurately.
