Chapter 24.11-12: Series and Parallel Analysis

Analyzing complex DC circuits requires the ability to reduce multi-component networks into simpler, manageable forms. This process is governed by the Principle of Equivalence: any combination of resistors can be replaced by a single Equivalent Resistance (\(R_{eq}\)) that draws the same total current from a source as the original network.

24.11 Series Circuits: The Single-Path Framework

A series circuit is defined as a configuration where components are connected sequentially, providing exactly one continuous path for charge carriers.

Total Current (\(I_T\))

According to the Principle of Conservation of Charge, the net charge passing through any cross-section per unit time must be identical.

\( I_T = I_1 = I_2 = I_3 \)

Total Voltage (\(V_T\))

Derived from the Conservation of Energy (Kirchhoff's Loop Rule), the total work done on a unit charge equals the sum of work through each component.

\( V_T = V_1 + V_2 + V_3 \)

24.12 Parallel Circuits: The Branching Framework

A parallel circuit exists when multiple components are connected across the same pair of common nodes. This configuration provides multiple independent paths for charge flow.

Total Voltage (\(V_T\))

Because all branches originate at the same node pair, they all experience the same electric potential difference (\(\Delta V\)).

\( V_T = V_1 = V_2 = V_3 \)

Total Current (\(I_T\))

By the Junction Rule, the total current entering the junction must divide among the available paths and then recombine.

\( I_T = I_1 + I_2 + I_3 \)

Deriving Equivalent Resistance

Series Derivation

Starting with the Loop Rule (\(V_T = \sum V_i\)) and applying Ohm's Law (\(V=IR\)):

\( I_T R_{eq} = I_1 R_1 + I_2 R_2 + \dots \)

Since current is constant (\(I_T = I_1 = I_2\)), we can factor and divide by \(I\):

\( R_{eq} = R_1 + R_2 + \dots \)

Physical Intuition: Resistors in series act like lengthening a pipe. The total obstruction is simply the sum of the individual parts.

Parallel Derivation

Starting with the Junction Rule (\(I_T = \sum I_i\)) and applying Ohm's Law (\(I=V/R\)):

\( \frac{V_T}{R_{eq}} = \frac{V_1}{R_1} + \frac{V_2}{R_2} + \dots \)

Since voltage is constant (\(V_T = V_1 = V_2\)), we factor and divide by \(V\):

\( \frac{1}{R_{eq}} = \frac{1}{R_1} + \frac{1}{R_2} + \dots \)

Physical Intuition: Resistors in parallel act like adding extra lanes to a highway. More lanes decrease the total obstruction.

Equivalent Circuit Diagram

From the perspective of nodes \(a\) and \(b\), the entire internal network behaves like a single "Black Box" macroscopic resistor.

24.13 Compound Network Reduction

In practice, most circuits are combinations of series and parallel sub-blocks. To solve these, we use a recursive reduction approach:

Identify Blocks

Locate small groups that are clearly strictly series or parallel.

Reduce Blocks

Calculate the \(R_{eq}\) for that sub-block and replace it with a single resistor symbol.

Re-Iterate

Draw the simplified circuit and repeat until only a single total resistance remains.

24.14 Power in Networks

The total power delivered (\(P_{total}\)) equals the sum of power dissipated by every component. Note the relationship with resistance:

\( P = IV \)

\( P = I^2 R = \frac{V^2}{R} \)

Series Analysis

Common current: use \(P = I^2 R\). Higher resistance = Higher power.

Parallel Analysis

Common voltage: use \(P = V^2 / R\). Lower resistance = Higher power.

Summary Result

"Adding a resistor in series increases total resistance and decreases total current. Adding a resistor in parallel decreases total resistance and increases total current."
