Topic: Magnetic Fields from Current-Carrying Conductors

I. The Genesis of the Field

In the study of electromagnetism, we find that electric and magnetic fields are intrinsically linked. While static charges produce electric fields, moving charges—such as those in a current-carrying wire—produce magnetic fields. This discovery, made by Hans Christian Ørsted in 1820, unified the study of electricity and magnetism.

Visualizing the Third Dimension

Unlike electric field lines which often radiate directly from a point charge, magnetic field lines form closed loops. For a long, straight wire, these loops are concentric circles centered on the wire. To represent this three-dimensionally on a two-dimensional page, we use vector conventions inspired by an arrow:

Viewing the Tip

If the field is coming out of the page toward your eye, you see the point of the arrow. We denote this with a dot in a circle: \(\odot\).

Viewing the Tail

If the field is going into the page away from you, you see the feathers (the X). We denote this with an X in a circle: \(\otimes\).

Understanding these orientations is critical. In AP Physics C, problems frequently involve wires oriented "into" the page or "out of" the page, requiring you to visualize the field lines circling the wire in the plane of the paper.

II. Determining Direction: Right Hand Rule 1 (RHR-1)

The relationship between current direction and magnetic field direction is defined by a "right-handed" geometry. To find the direction of the magnetic field \(\vec{B}\) produced by a current \(I\), follow these steps:

Point your right thumb in the direction of the conventional current flow.

Naturally curl your fingers around the imaginary wire.

The direction of your fingers represents the magnetic field loops.

III. Ampere's Law: Solving for Field Magnitude

In AP Physics C, we use **Ampere's Law** to determine the magnitude of the magnetic field \(B\). It states that the circulation of the magnetic field around any closed loop is proportional to the current passing through it.

Mathematical Formulation

\[ \oint \vec{B} \cdot d\vec{s} = \mu_0 I_{\text{enc}} \]

Where:

\(\mu_0 = 4\pi \times 10^{-7} \text{ T}\cdot\text{m/A}\)

\(I_{\text{enc}}\) is the net current through the loop.

Application: The Long Straight Wire

For a wire with high symmetry, we follow these logical steps:

1. Select Amperian Loop

A circle of radius \(r\) centered on the wire ensures \(B\) is constant along the path.

2. Evaluate the Integral

Since \(\vec{B} \parallel d\vec{s}\), \(\oint B ds = B(2\pi r)\).

3. Solve for B

Set \(B(2\pi r) = \mu_0 I\) and solve.

\[ B_{\text{wire}} = \frac{\mu_0 I}{2\pi r} \]

Step-by-Step Example

"Determine the field 10 cm away from a 5.0 A current."

1. Identify: \(I = 5.0\), \(r = 0.1\)

2. Apply: \(B = \frac{(4\pi \times 10^{-7})(5.0)}{2\pi(0.1)}\)

3. Compute: \(B = 1.0 \times 10^{-5} \text{ T}\)

Note: Observe how \(B\) decreases linearly with distance. This \(1/r\) relationship is characteristic of infinite line sources.

IV. Interaction: The Lorentz Force Law

Magnetic fields exert forces on electric charges, but only if they are **moving**. A stationary charge in a magnetic field experiences zero magnetic force. This interaction is the foundation of electric motors and particle accelerators.

Force on a Moving Charge

\[ \vec{F}_B = q(\vec{v} \times \vec{B}) \]

The force is always perpendicular to both the velocity (\(\vec{v}\)) and the magnetic field (\(\vec{B}\)). Its magnitude is \(F_B = |q|vB \sin\theta\).

Force on a Wire Segment

\[ \vec{F}_B = I (\vec{L} \times \vec{B}) \]

Used for macroscopic wires where \(I\) is current and \(\vec{L}\) is the length vector in the direction of the current.

The Second Right Hand Rule (RHR-2)

Step-by-Step Force Direction:

1 Fingers: Point straight in direction of \(\vec{v}\) or \(I\).
2 Curl: Curl fingers toward the field lines \(\vec{B}\).
3 Thumb: Points in the direction of force \(\vec{F}_B\) for \(+\) charges.

CRITICAL: If the charge is negative (like an electron), the force is in the OPPOSITE direction of your thumb.

V. Synthesis: Particle Motion and Parallel Wires

Magnetic Centripetal Force

Because the magnetic force is always perpendicular to velocity, it performs no work on the particle (since \(W = \int \vec{F} \cdot d\vec{r}\) and \(\vec{F} \perp d\vec{r}\)). Instead, it acts as a centripetal force, causing the particle to move in a circle.

\[ F_B = F_c \implies qvB = \frac{mv^2}{R} \]

\[ R = \frac{mv}{qB} \]

The "Cyclotron Radius" Formula

Constant force toward center = Uniform Circular Motion

Forces Between Parallel Currents

When two wires carry current, wire 1 produces a field that exerts a force on wire 2, and vice versa.

Parallel (Same Direction)

Wires ATTRACT each other.

Using RHR-1, wire 1's field is \(\otimes\) at wire 2. Using RHR-2, current up in field \(\otimes\) pulls left toward wire 1.

Anti-Parallel (Opposite)

Wires REPEL each other.

The directions of the forces reverse, pushing the conductors away from one another.
