The Weighted Grade Formula

Your final grade is calculated by multiplying each category average by its decimal weight:

\[ \text{Final Grade} = (\bar{A} \times 0.60) + (\bar{C} \times 0.20) + (\bar{H} \times 0.20) \]

\(\bar{A}\) = Assessments (60%)

\(\bar{C}\) = Classwork (20%)

\(\bar{H}\) = Homework (20%)

Step-by-Step Worked Example

1. Calculate Category Averages:

Assessments: \((85\% + 95\%) \div 2 = \mathbf{90.0\%}\)
Classwork: \((70\% + 80\%) \div 2 = \mathbf{75.0\%}\)
Homework: \((100\% + 90\%) \div 2 = \mathbf{95.0\%}\)

2. Apply Weighted Math:

Assess: \(90.0 \times 0.60 = \mathbf{54.0}\)

Class: \(75.0 \times 0.20 = \mathbf{15.0}\)

Home: \(95.0 \times 0.20 = \mathbf{19.0}\)

Total: \(54.0 + 15.0 + 19.0 = \mathbf{88.0\%} \text{ (B+)}\)

The Golden Formulas

1. Calculating from Category Averages (Row 2 Example) Standard

If your category averages are in cells B2, C2, and D2, paste this formula in E2:

=(B2 * 0.60) + (C2 * 0.20) + (D2 * 0.20)

2. Handling Blank Categories (Null-Safe Version) Advanced

Prevents error flags (#DIV/0!) if a student has no grades recorded in a category yet:

Teacher Quick Tips

Why weighting over total points?

Total point scales give excessive weight to homework simply by increasing assignments. Weighting guarantees that major projects/exams represent exactly 60% of the course mark regardless of assignment volume.

How do I test my setup?

Insert dummy grades. Create a "Max Student" with all 100s to verify they hit 100%, and a "Borderline Student" using the Grade Scenario Simulator on page 1 to double-check calculation math.
