Reading Passage: The Diverse Landscapes of Europe

Europe is a very unique landmass. It is often called a **peninsula** because it is surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean, the Baltic Sea, and the Mediterranean Sea on three of its sides. Because of this coastal shape, cool ocean winds can easily travel deep into the middle of the continent, keeping temperatures comfortable for most of the year.

This prevents central Europe from having a freezing, harsh **climate** during long winter months. Instead of experiencing extreme subzero temperatures like other northern regions of the world, Europe remains surprisingly warm. This is because the Gulf Stream **current** constantly flows like a warm river across the Atlantic Ocean from the Gulf of Mexico toward Western European shores.

Rivers also play a massive role in Europe's geography. Long rivers like the Danube and the Rhine run across many countries. These rivers act like natural highways. For hundreds of years, people used them to carry goods, travel, and share ideas. Today, these busy waterways continue to connect different nations and help their economies grow.

These different landscapes helped many different cultures grow. Long ago, distinct groups settled in deep valleys and along the coastlines. Some of these groups were **native** to these quiet valleys, while others arrived much later. Over time, waves of **migration** brought new people, languages, and traditions to these local towns.

Today, European nations try to work together while keeping their own identities. To this day, each country is **independent** and proudly controls its own laws and borders. Even so, European nations still choose to **unite** through the European Union to build trade, share their resources, and help one another grow.
