1. What are Motivations & Behaviors?

To truly understand a story, we must look at characters as real people with goals and reactions.

Character Motivation

The underlying reasons that prompt characters to act or speak in specific ways.

Pay close attention to their: thoughts, feelings, dialogue, actions, and reactions.

Character Behavior

Their observable actions or reactions in the story.

Key Rule: Characters' motivations often influence their behaviors.

2. What is Plot?

Plot is the series of events that take place in a story. Fill in the elements of a standard plot diagram below:

Exposition

Resolution

Non-Linear Plot Development:

Authors sometimes use non-linear elements like flashbacks (looking back) or foreshadowing (hints of what's to come) to reveal deep insights into characters and build suspense.

3. Impact on Plot & Theme

How do motivation & behavior change the plot? Characters' motivations influence the decisions they make, which impacts the resolution of the conflict.

What is theme? The theme is the big idea or lesson you learn from a story.

To find theme, ask yourself: How do characters change throughout the story, and what can I learn from their experiences?

When Analyzing, I Must Ask Myself:

1. How do the characters act or react? Why do they do this?
2. Based on the text, how do their actions affect the plot?
3. What lesson can I learn from the way the major conflict is resolved?

Part A: Inferring Motivations (Visual Study)

Scenario: A teenage boy sits on a living room sofa with large headphones clamped over his ears, smiling widely as he clutches a video game controller. His mother stands right beside him, gesturing assertively with her hand while displaying a firm, unhappy expression.

Observable Behaviors

The Boy's Behavior:

Has headphones on, holds game controller, and smiles.

The Mother's Behavior:

Standing directly next to him, frowning with hands gesturing/asking him to stop.

Inferred Motivations (Why?)

The Boy's Motivation:

Wants to keep playing video games, escape distractions, and have fun.

The Mother's Motivation:

Wants him to stop playing, listen to her, or calm down.

Predictive Plot Impact: How will this affect what happens next?

If the boy continues to ignore her instructions, the mother will likely take away his console or unplug the game to enforce her rule.

"On the afternoon of my encounter with Peeta Mellark, the rain was falling in relentless icy sheets... The rain had soaked through my father's hunting jacket, leaving me chilled to the bone. For three days, we'd had nothing but boiled water with some old dry mint leaves I'd found in the back of a cupboard... I lifted the lid to the baker's trash bin and found it spotlessly, heartlessly bare."
