2. Time Management

0-75 mins:

Part I (MC)

Aim for 3 minutes per question. Use the calculator to verify every bubble.

75-120 mins:

Parts II & III

Tackle your strongest topics first. Show all work to secure partial credit.

120-150 mins:

Part IV (Big One)

Usually 3 parts (a, b, c). Even if you can't do part 'a', try to finish 'b' and 'c'.

Algebra 1 graders award points for correct mathematical procedures even if you made a simple calculation mistake earlier in the problem.

Example: If you get the wrong linear equation in part 'a' but you graph THAT wrong equation perfectly in part 'b', you can still earn full points for part 'b'!

Standard Form Check

When a question asks for standard form, exponents must decrease: \(x^2 + 5x - 6\).

The Negative Flip

If you divide an inequality by a negative, FLIP the sign! Failure to flip is a common point loss.

Rounding Precision

Check for tenth, hundredth, or integer. -1 point if you rounding to the wrong place value.

High-Yield Habits

The 5-Point Rule

For any parabola graph, plot at least 5 points: the vertex plus two points on each side.

Explain with Logic

If it says "Explain," write a full sentence. Using only numbers is often zero credit for that part.

Plug and Check

For systems and equations, plug your answers back into the original. If the equation isn't true, fix it!
