The Gravity Defiers

[1] When you look up at the soaring acrobats in a circus, it seems as though they are breaking the laws of nature. However, these amazing performers are actually master scientists who use the principles of physics to create their jaw-dropping acts. From the high wire to the flying trapeze, every move is a carefully calculated dance with gravity, momentum, and balance.

[2] One of the most important concepts for an acrobat is the center of mass. This is the single point where an object’s weight is perfectly balanced. For a human standing still, this point is usually in the center of the torso. Acrobats must keep their center of mass directly over their base of support—whether that is their own feet, a partner’s hands, or a thin wire. If their center of mass shifts too far to one side, gravity will pull them down. To stay balanced, tightrope walkers often carry long, heavy poles that lower their center of mass and make them more stable.

[3] Momentum is another scientific tool used under the Big Top. Momentum is "mass in motion," and it is what allows a trapeze artist to swing from one bar to another. By pumping their legs and shifting their weight, performers build up enough momentum to fly through the air. The faster they move and the more they weigh, the more momentum they have. This momentum gives them the force needed to reach their partner’s hands before gravity pulls them toward the safety net below.

[4] Finally, acrobats must manage friction to perform safely. Friction is the force that resists motion between two surfaces. For an aerialist climbing long silk ribbons, friction is what keeps them from sliding to the floor. They often use "rosin"—a sticky substance made from pine trees—on their hands and feet to increase friction and improve their grip. Without enough friction, the most talented performers would find it impossible to hold onto their equipment or each other.
