To introduce students to the four instrument families of the orchestra and the physical mechanics of how each produces sound. Students will learn to distinguish families based on visual and auditory cues.

The Mystery Sound Hook (10 min)
Begin the lesson with students' eyes closed. Play 3 distinct instrument sounds (e.g., Cello, Flute, Snare Drum). After each, ask: "Is this sound made of wood or metal? Is it heavy or light?"
Tip: Use the slides to reveal the mystery instruments after students make their guesses.

Family Introductions (15 min)
Move through the Orchestra Scout Slides. For each family, demonstrate the "how":
Strings: Mimic bowing a violin. Discuss vibrations of the string.
Woodwinds: Mimic blowing air. Mention the 'reed' (a piece of wood that vibrates).
Brass: Have students practice "buzzing" their lips like a bee.
Percussion: Air-drum a rhythm. Mention that anything struck is percussion.

The Discovery Mapping (20 min)
Distribute the Family Map Worksheet. Play short excerpts of orchestral music (Britten's Young Person's Guide to the Orchestra is ideal). Students must identify which family is playing and complete their maps.

Check for Understanding
Hold up a picture of an instrument (e.g., Trombone). Students should perform the physical action (Buzzing lips) to show they know which family it belongs to.

Objective
Students will build a complex polyrhythm using body percussion, mimicking the way an orchestral percussion section layers different sounds to create a "heartbeat". They will also practice dynamic control (Forte and Piano) within their rhythm.
