Objective

Students will be able to identify the central idea in a non-fiction passage with 80% accuracy.

Teacher Preparation

Print copies of the Idea Ignite! Warm-Up and Central Idea Challenge Worksheet for each student.

Have the Answer Key ready for quick reference.

Prepare the projector/whiteboard for the Slide Deck.

Instructional Sequence

Warm-Up: Idea Ignite!

5 MIN

Distribute the Warm-Up: Idea Ignite! to each student.
Instruct students to independently complete the activity, which asks them to identify the central idea of a very short paragraph.
After 3 minutes, ask a few students to share their answers. Discuss briefly what makes a good central idea statement.

Introduction to Central Idea

8 MIN

Use the Main Idea Marvels! Slide Deck and follow the Script to introduce the concept.
Explain that the central idea is the most important point the author wants to make about the topic.
Provide examples and non-examples of central ideas using the slides.
Guide students through the process: Find Topic → Look for Details → Formulate Statement.

Guided Practice: Detectives

10 MIN

Display the practice passages from the Slide Deck.
Working together as a class, apply the steps learned to identify the central idea of each passage.
Encourage students to share their reasoning and discuss different formulations of the central idea.

Independent Practice: Challenge

5 MIN

Distribute the Central Idea Challenge Worksheet.
Instruct students to work independently on identifying the central idea for the passages provided.
Circulate around the room to offer support. Inform students that any unfinished work can be completed for homework.

Cool-Down: My Main Takeaway

2 MIN

Ask students to write down one key thing they learned about finding the central idea on their exit ticket. Collect as they exit.
