Introduction & Review
Explain that many words have multiple meanings. We act as "detectives" using context clues to find the right definition. Write two examples of the word "bat" on the board (animal vs. sports equipment) and ask students for other examples they know.
5m
Think-Aloud Modeling
Write: “The bat flew out of the cave at dusk.” Underline clues like "flew" and "cave" . Explain how these clues eliminate the "baseball bat" definition and support the "animal" definition.
7m
Guided Practice
Distribute the Context Clue Quest Worksheets . Have students read the first sentence aloud and identify clues before selecting an answer. Circulate to check for understanding as they finish the remaining items.
10m
The Game: Context Clue Quest
Pairs use the Game Board and Task Cards. Player 1 draws a card, reads the sentence, and identifies the correct meaning. If correct, they move 1 space. Challenge! spaces require an answer within 60 seconds.
3m
Reflection & Exit Ticket
"What was one clue that helped you most today?" Have each student share one word they mastered. Collect worksheets to assess growth.
Pro Tip
If students struggle, encourage them to substitute the definition into the sentence: "The animal that flies flew out of the cave" vs. "The wooden stick flew out of the cave." Which one makes more sense?
