Objective

Students will identify key story elements (characters, setting, plot, conflict, resolution) and apply them to create an original short narrative.

Teacher Preparation

Review the Storytelling Slide Deck and test audio/visual equipment.
Print copies of the Story Elements Worksheet and My Story Idea Journal for each student.
Prepare character, setting, and conflict cards for the Story Scramble Activity.
Time check: Ensure 15 minutes of prep time is allocated before the session.

Warm-up: What's Your Favorite Story?

• Allow 2-3 students to share briefly with the class.

• Transition: "Today, we're going to learn about the secrets behind all great stories!"

Introduction to Story Elements

Direct instruction via slide deck.

Use the Slide Deck to introduce:

Characters: Who is the story about?
Setting: Where and when?
Plot: The journey (Beginning, Middle, End).
Conflict: The central problem or challenge.
Resolution: How the problem is solved.

Tip: Use a familiar fairy tale (like Little Red Riding Hood) as a running example.

Individual practice and application.

• Distribute the Story Elements Worksheet.

• Students work independently to identify the five elements in the provided short story, "The Hungry Squirrel."

• Circulate to provide support, specifically focusing on the difference between conflict and resolution.
