The Peach Basket Game
In 1891, a gym teacher named Dr. James Naismith had a problem. His students were bored staying inside during the cold winter. He nailed two peach baskets to the balcony railings—10 feet high!
In the first game, students used a soccer ball. Every time someone made a basket, the game had to stop so someone could climb a ladder and get the ball out! Eventually, they cut holes in the bottom of the baskets so the ball would fall through.

The Game of the Palm
Tennis started in France over 800 years ago! Back then, people didn't use rackets. They hit the ball with their bare hands! It was called "jeu de paume," which means "game of the palm."
In 1873, a man named Major Walter Wingfield created a version of the game that could be played on grass. This was called "Lawn Tennis." The most famous tournament, Wimbledon, started in England in 1877.

The Invention of Mintonette
Volleyball was invented in 1895 by William G. Morgan. He wanted a game that was less rough than basketball. He called his new game "Mintonette." He used a net from tennis and raised it to 6 feet and 6 inches high.
In a game, someone noticed that players were "volleying" the ball back and forth. So, the name was changed to volleyball! In 1920, a rule was added that each team could only hit the ball three times.
