3. Simplify to unit rate: \(4\text{ sq yd per gallon}\)

Conceptual Check: Does 4 Make Sense?

If \(\frac{1}{6}\) gallon covers \(\frac{2}{3}\) sq yd, then 1 whole gallon has 6 of those parts.

\(6 \times \frac{2}{3} = \frac{12}{3} = 4\text{ sq yd}\)

Notice: Units always tell you the order! "Square yards per gallon" means: Square Yards ÷ Gallons

Application: Surface Area and Rates of Coverage Slide 4 / 7

WORKED EXAMPLE 3

Fractional Flow Rate Challenge

Liquid Volume

A reservoir drain empties \(\frac{3}{5}\) liter in \(\frac{2}{7}\) minute. What is the draining rate in liters per minute?

Calculation Procedure

Ratio: \(\frac{\frac{3}{5}}{\frac{2}{7}}\)

Multiply Reciprocal: \(\frac{3}{5} \times \frac{7}{2}\)

Product: \(\frac{21}{10}\text{ L/min}\)

Mixed Number: \(2\frac{1}{10}\text{ L/min}\)

Two Key Reminders

Improper vs. Mixed: Both \(\frac{21}{10}\) and \(2\frac{1}{10}\) are correct! In science and algebra, improper fractions are frequently preferred.

Estimate to Verify: \(\frac{2}{7}\) min is slightly less than \(\frac{1}{3}\) min. In one minute, there are roughly three \(\frac{2}{7}\) periods: \(3 \times \frac{3}{5} = \frac{9}{5} = 1.8\). Our answer of \(2.1\) is very reasonable!

Decimal Equivalent 2.1 Liters per Minute

Fractional Units: Always check reasonableness with estimation Slide 5 / 7

SPOT THE SLIP

Common Pitfalls & Error Analysis

Class Discussion

Problem: A cyclist rides \(\frac{3}{4}\) mile in \(\frac{2}{3}\) hour. What is the unit rate in miles per hour?

Student A's Work Incorrect

\(\frac{2}{3} \div \frac{3}{4}\)

\(=\frac{2}{3} \times \frac{4}{3} = \frac{8}{9}\text{ mph}\)

What went wrong?

Swapped the order! Placed time ÷ distance instead of distance ÷ time.

Student B's Work Correct

\(\frac{3}{4}\text{ mi} \div \frac{2}{3}\text{ hr}\)

\(=\frac{3}{4} \times \frac{3}{2} = \frac{9}{8} = 1\frac{1}{8}\text{ mph}\)

Why is this accurate?

Followed miles per hour: distance in numerator, time in denominator, correctly inverted \(\frac{2}{3}\).

Memory Hook: "Y per X" always means "Y divided by X" Slide 6 / 7

25 Minutes Active Work

1. Set Up Ratio

Identify the target unit rate. Put the quantity being measured on top, and the single unit goal on the bottom.

Target: Quantity / 1 Unit

2. Invert & Multiply

Keep the first fraction, change division to multiplication, and flip the denominator fraction to its reciprocal.

\(\frac{a}{b} \times \frac{d}{c}\)

3. Label & Check

Simplify completely and write full compound units (e.g., miles/hr, sq ft/can, gallons/min). Check reasonableness!
