This is not magic. It is the power of magnets! Magnets create an invisible force all around them. We cannot see this force, but we can see what it does. It helps hold notes on a fridge and even helps move fast trains! 2 Every magnet has two ends called poles. There is a north pole and a south pole. The rules for magnets are very simple. If you put two north poles together, they will push away from each other. But if you put a north pole near a south pole, they will snap together! This is why people say "opposites attract." 3 The magnetic force is strongest at the ends of the magnet. If you put tiny bits of metal around a magnet, they will show you the shape of the force. The bits form curved lines that loop from one pole to the other. This invisible tug can even travel through paper, plastic, and water! 4 People first found magnets a long time ago. They found a special kind of rock called lodestone. These rocks were natural magnets. They could pull small bits of iron toward them. At first, people just used these rocks for fun or to show tricks. They did not know that these rocks would change the world. 5 Later, people learned how to use magnets to find their way. They made a tool called a compass. If you float a small piece of lodestone on water, it always points north. This helped sailors travel across the big ocean without getting lost. Because of the compass, people could visit new lands and trade with each other. 6 Why is a magnet so strong? It is because of how the tiny parts inside it are aligned. In most things, these tiny parts point in all different directions. But in a magnet, the parts are all aligned. This means they are all lined up in a straight, neat row. This makes the magnet very powerful. 7 Today, we use magnets in many ways. Doctors use giant magnets to look inside the human body. These machines help doctors see if people are healthy.
