The Altitudinal Partition

Start with a right triangle with legs \( a, b \) and hypotenuse \( c \).

1. Drop the altitude \( h \) from the right angle to the hypotenuse.

2. This divides the large triangle into two smaller triangles.

3. Crucially, all three triangles are similar.

Because the triangles are similar, their areas must be proportional to the square of their hypotenuses.

Left Triangle

\( E a^2 \)

Right Triangle

\( E b^2 \)

Whole Triangle

\( E c^2 \)

Where \( E \) is a constant of proportionality depending only on the shape (the angles).

Area Additivity

\( E c^2 = E a^2 + E b^2 \)

\( c^2 = a^2 + b^2 \)

By dividing both sides by the proportionality constant \( E \), the Pythagorean relationship emerges purely from the logic of similarity.
