Before we extract data, check your Zone. Are you calm and focused in the GREEN ZONE?

If you are in Yellow or Red, take a "3-Second Pause" before the next slide.

Watch out for Space Junk!

Word problems are full of "Space Junk." This is information that makes the story sound good, but doesn't help you do the math.

Space Junk Examples:

• Characters' names (Leo, Sarah, etc.)
• Descriptions (Shiny, red, giant, happy)
• Backstory (He was walking to the park on Tuesday)

Sample Word Problem

On a sunny Tuesday afternoon, Sarah walked her big brown dog to the park. She brought 12 treats in her pocket. Her friend Mike gave her 8 more treats.

Scanning for Mission Data

Step 1: Tag Numbers

Circle every number you see. These are your raw materials.

Step 2: Label Them

Give every number a name. 12 = Treats. 8 = More Treats.

Step 3: Find Goal

Underline the question. What is the mission asking you to find?
