Defining the Method

Coined by J.L. Moreno, sociometry is the mathematical and social study of psychological properties of populations.

Reveals "hidden" choices, preferences, and connections.

Uses the physical body to represent social data.

Allows for nuanced differences without requiring immediate speech. Safety in numbers.

The Spatial Categorization

Define specific "corners" or areas in the room that represent categories or lived experiences.

"Go to the corner that represents the part of your identity that was most salient to you in your first job."

Race/Ethnicity

Gender/Sexuality

Social Class

Religion/Spirituality

Ask: "What do you notice about where people are standing? What surprises you?"

Invite cross-room dialogue: "Tell the person in the other corner one thing you value about your spot."

Translate the physical map to verbal insight. "What does this tell us about the power dynamics here?"

Crucial: The physical movement is the intervention. The processing is the integration.
