The Core Dilemma

"How do we foster a shared sense of belonging without erasing the individual differences that make the group whole?"

Forced universalism ("We are all the same here") often prioritizes the comfort of the majority at the expense of marginalized identities.

Pluralistic belonging: A state where members feel valued because of their uniqueness, not despite it.

Inadvertent Alienation

A facilitator asks a new support group for adolescents to "Bring in an object that represents home" for an icebreaker.

Two members who are currently in the foster care system and one member experiencing housing instability feel immediate shame and disconnect.

Critical Domains for Inclusion

Assessing the intersections of identity (race, gender, ability, class) present in the group.

Identifying historical or systemic reasons members may mistrust the institution or facilitator.

Understanding cultural variations in eye contact, silence, and directness.

Pre-identifying potential dominance patterns based on societal status.

Applied Practice

Using the hypothetical group profile provided, you will now create a Cultural Map that identifies:

Identities that typically hold power in this context.

Factors that might cause a member to withdraw or hide.

Commonalities that can bridge these differences.
