Lesson Objective

Students will be able to distinguish between vague moods (e.g., irritability, melancholy) and specific, processed emotions (e.g., anger, sadness) by practicing somatic awareness and introspection techniques.

Instructional Sequence

Warm-up: The Emotion Wheel (5 min)

Display the Emotion Wheel Graphic. Ask students to look beyond the center (basic emotions) and find three specific feelings they have experienced in the last 24 hours that aren't just "good," "bad," or "fine."

Pause Point 1 (0:30): Expectations vs. Reality

"Have you ever felt an emotion you thought you 'shouldn't' feel? Like boredom at a party or anger toward someone you love?"

Pause Point 2 (1:00): The Bottle Effect

"What happens when you shake a soda bottle and open it? How is that like 'unfelt feelings'?"

Pause Point 3 (2:56): Body Signals

"Pause right now. Check your shoulders and jaw. Are they tight? What might that tension be trying to say?"

Activity: The Penumbra Hunt (20 min)

Silence (5 min): Dim the lights. Ask students to find a "quiet spot" (heads on desks or looking away from screens). Lead a brief guided reflection using the central question: "What am I feeling now?"

Journaling (15 min): Distribute the Inner Inquiry Journal. Students write privately, attempting to name at least one hidden emotion and conducting the somatic (body) scan.

Reflection: Anonymous Exit Ticket (5 min)

Hand out the Shadow Signals Exit Ticket. Students write one "unfelt feeling" they discovered or one barrier they felt during the silence. Collect these anonymously to gauge class sentiment.
