Students will explain the economic shift from bartering to banking in Ancient Egypt, focusing on the efficiency of grain receipts as a precursor to modern currency.

Preparation & Materials

Heavy Items: 20-30 heavy books or wooden blocks (representing "Grain Sacks").
Bank Receipts: Small slips of yellow paper or the provided "Papyrus Receipts".
Role Cards: Cut and distributed from the Nile Market Scenarios document.
The "Bank": A large, clear area (Teacher's Desk) to store "Grain Sacks".

Phase 1: The Barter Struggle

Hand out the heavy items to "Farmers". Farmers must physically carry 3-4 heavy books/blocks at all times to trade for their desired goods from Merchants.

Discussion Pivot: Stop the class after 5 minutes. Ask: "How tired are your arms? How hard was it to find exactly the person who wanted your grain?"

Phase 2: The Receipt Revolution

Introduce the Grain Bank. Farmers deposit their heavy books at your desk. In exchange, give them one "Papyrus Receipt" per book. They now trade the paper receipts for goods.

Key Concept: Explain that the paper itself isn't the value—it represents the grain sitting safely in the pharaoh's warehouse (bank).

Discussion Anchors

"Why would a Merchant accept a piece of paper instead of actual grain?"

Expected Response: Trust in the banking system and the Pharaoh. They know they can go to the bank and get the grain later if they need it.

"How did this system help Egypt become a global trading superstar?"

Expected Response: It allowed for faster trading, easier transportation of 'wealth', and attracted foreign merchants who didn't want to carry heavy goods across deserts.

Extension: Design Your Currency

Challenge students to create a "Receipt of Value" for a specific good. They must include:

Official seal of the Pharaoh
Specific amount (e.g., 5 Debens of Silver)
Merchant signature space
Expiration or Date of Deposit
