Students will identify key elements of a respectful classroom and co-create a Safe Space Charter with at least five ground rules they commit to upholding.

Establishing clear, student-generated ground rules fosters ownership, mutual respect, and a positive learning climate, reducing conflict and supporting inclusion.

Introduction & Engagement

Project Building Our Safe Space title slide.
Ask: “What makes you feel safe and respected in class?”
Record student responses on chart paper.
Highlight themes of respect, honesty, and kindness.

Modeling Respectful Behaviors

Use slide deck scenarios to demonstrate respectful vs. disrespectful behaviors.
Invite volunteers to role-play positive and negative examples.
Discuss how each behavior impacts classmates’ feelings and safety.

03 12 Min

Co-Constructing Ground Rules

Divide students into small groups and provide each with chart paper and Activity Sheet.
Instruct groups to draft 3–4 ground rules using the provided prompts.
Circulate to support wording and clarity.
Reconvene; groups share rules aloud.
Cluster similar ideas and vote on top five rules with a "thumbs-up" system.

04 3 Min

One Word Exit Ticket

Distribute One Word Exit Ticket slips.
Prompt: “Write one word that describes how today’s discussion makes you feel about our classroom.”
Collect and review trends to gauge student buy-in.

05 5 Min

Wrap-Up & Next Steps

Display the drafted Safe Space Charter on chart paper.
Invite students to sign or initial beside each rule.
Explain the charter will be posted and used as a reference all year.
Encourage students to celebrate respectful interactions!
