The Hook (5 mins)

"Listen to the sound of a race car or a motorcycle as it passes by. Why does the 'VRRRRRRR' sound high as it approaches but drops to a 'VROOOOOOOM' as it moves away?"

Have students mimic the sound. Emphasize the sudden drop in pitch exactly at the moment it passes the observer.

Observation: The Stationary Source (10 mins)

Display a ripple tank simulation with a stationary source. Ask students to identify the distance between wavefronts (wavelength) in all directions. It should be uniform.

Inquiry: The Moving Source (20 mins)

Change the simulation setting so the source moves. Ask: "What is happening to the wavefronts in front of the source? What about behind?"

Discussion Prompt: "Is the source actually making a different frequency sound, or is it just the way we receive it?"

Students complete the "Wavefront Geometry Activity" to sketch and calculate relative wavelengths based on source speed.

Common Misconceptions

The "Changing Loudness" Trap

Students often confuse the Doppler Effect with simple volume changes. Clarify that while an approaching car gets louder, the Doppler effect specifically refers to the shift in pitch (frequency).

Source vs. Wave Speed

Ensure students understand that the wave speed through the medium remains constant; it is only the relative distance between pulses that changes.
