The Hook: Hamster's Secret Life

"Dear Diary, Today the small humans were very loud. One of them dropped a piece of a carrot near my cage. I waited until the lights went out, then I pounced! It was the best night ever."

Action: Read this entry to the class. Ask: "Who is telling this story? How do we know?" Point out the words I and my.

Instructional Steps

The Power of "I"

Introduce the concept of 1st Person POV. Explain that the narrator is in the story. Use the visual anchor of a narrator holding the camera themselves.

Object Perspectives

Show students a pencil. Brainstorm: If this pencil had a diary, what would it complain about? (Getting its head sharpened, being chewed on, the eraser getting smaller).

Workshop: The Object Diary

Students choose a classroom object and write a first-person diary entry. They must use at least 5 first-person pronouns.

Circulate: Listen for students who say "The pencil feels..." instead of "I feel...". Gently guide them back to the 1st person voice.
