Decoding -ary, -ery, and -ory

All three suffixes sound exactly the same: /əri/. To spell them correctly, we have to look at meaning and roots.

Meaning B: A collection or activity

Example: Machinery (A collection of machines)

Thinking Hint: -ery often attaches to a full base word you already know (bake, machine, slave).

-ory

Meaning A: A Place

Example: Factory (A place where things are made)

Meaning B: Something involving activity/action

Example: Explanatory (Serving to explain something)

Thinking Hint: -ory is heavily linked to Latin roots like labor, fact, and explana.

Root: dict

Means "to speak" or "to say."

Full Meaning: A book containing words and how to speak/say them.

factory

fact + ory

Root: fact

Means "to make" or "to do."

Full Meaning: A place where things are made or done.

Morphology: Labor & Plan

labor + at + ory

Root: labor

Means "work."

Full Meaning: A place involving scientific or experimental work.

explanatory

ex + plan + at + ory

Root: plan

Comes from planus meaning "flat" or "clear."

Full Meaning: Serving to make something clear (explain).

Choose + Justify

Don't just guess. Use the logic.

Bak___

Logic: "Bake" is a full English base word. We usually add -ery to full base words to show an activity or place.

Libr___

Logic: Comes from Latin liber (book). Suffix -ary means a place for specific collections.

Territor___

Logic: Root terra (land). Use -ory for words related to land control or action.

The Master Rule:

If the root ends in -at- (like Labor-at-, Explan-at-), it almost always uses -ory.
