Lesson Objective

Students will draft two versions of a single narrative plot: one version from the first-person point of view (character's voice) and one from the third-person point of view (observer's voice).

The Hook: The Perspective Flip

"Heads for 'I', Tails for 'She'!"

Show a picture of a cat stuck in a tree. Flip a coin. If it's heads, students must say a sentence about the cat starting with "I". If tails, they start with "The cat" or "He/She". Do this 3-4 times to practice the rapid switch.

Action: Use a physical coin or a digital flipper. This builds the "mental flexibility" needed to draft two versions of one story.

Drafting Instructions

Simple Plots are Best

Advise students to pick a "tiny moment" plot so they can focus on POV rather than complex action.
Examples: Losing a tooth, making a sandwich, a rainy day recess, finding a lucky penny.

Consistency is Key

Emphasize that the events must be the same in both versions. Only the voice changes.
Example: In both stories, the character must trip over a rug.

The "Twin Tale" Sheet

Provide the drafting worksheet. Encourage students to write the 1st person version first, then "translate" it into 3rd person.

Guidance: Remind students that in 1st person, we can hear internal thoughts ("I felt nervous"). In 3rd person (objective), we only see the outward signs ("She bit her nails").
