Lesson Overview

In this lesson, students explore the narrative vessel of the adage: the fable. By reading classic stories, students will identify the "moral" (the central lesson) and see how that moral can be summarized as a traditional proverb. This helps students understand that proverbs aren't just isolated phrases—they are conclusions drawn from shared human experiences.

1. The Hook: The Missing Moral

Tell the beginning of a fable (e.g., "The Boy Who Cried Wolf") but stop before the character faces the consequence of their actions.

Ask: "What do you think happens next? What lesson is the character about to learn?"
Reveal the ending and ask: "Which proverb fits this lesson better: 'Honesty is the best policy' or 'Look before you leap'?"

2. Direct Instruction: Fables as Vehicles

Explain that fables are short stories, usually with animal characters, that teach a specific lesson. The moral of the fable is the "point" of the story, and most morals can be summarized by an adage.

Example to Share:

Story: The Tortoise and the Hare

Lesson: The Hare was fast but lazy; the Tortoise was slow but kept going.

Proverb: "Slow and steady wins the race."

3. Guided Practice: Matching the Masters

Use the Moral Messenger Slides to present three short summaries of fables. Ask students to select the best proverb from a "Wisdom Bank" to match each story. Discuss why the proverb fits.

Focus on Evidence

Always ask students: "What specifically happened in the story that proves this proverb is the right match?" This builds critical reading skills.

Cultural Connection

Mention that different cultures have different fables but often end up with very similar proverbs. Wisdom is a global language!
