Instructional Purpose

To transition from light physics to biological processing. Students must understand that the eye is a mechanical filter (cornea to lens) that prepares light for the chemical process (retina).

Core Definition: Transduction

The conversion of one form of energy into another. In sensation, the transforming of stimulus energies (sights, sounds, smells) into neural impulses our brain can interpret.

Lab Facilitation Notes

The Accommodation Lab

While students focus on their finger, they should notice a slight strain or "tightening" in the eye. This is the ciliary muscles contracting to make the lens thicker (rounder).

Key takeaway for students:

"The lens is alive and active; it is not a static piece of glass."

Inversion Logic

The correct answer for Part 3 is that "vision" happens in the brain, not the eye. The eye captures the image; the occipital lobe interprets it. The brain "flips" the data to match our proprioception (body awareness).

Troubleshooting & Misconceptions

Iris vs. Pupil

Students often think the pupil is a structure. Clarify that it is an empty hole; the iris is the muscle that changes its size.

Presbyopia (Aging Eyes)

As we age, the lens loses elasticity and becomes brittle. This makes it harder to "round" for near vision, hence the need for reading glasses.
