Part 1: Introduction 2 Minutes
"Good morning/afternoon, everyone! Today, we're going to talk about something super important for how we interact with each other, both in school and outside: personal boundaries. Has anyone ever heard that term before?"
[Pause for brief responses]
"Think about it like this: just like a fence around a yard, a personal boundary is an invisible line that helps us feel safe and comfortable. It tells others what we are and are not okay with."
"These boundaries can be physical – like how close someone stands to you, or if they touch your belongings without asking. They can be emotional – like what topics you’re comfortable discussing, or how you expect people to talk to you. And in our world today, they can also be digital – like asking permission before posting a picture of someone online, or not sharing someone's private messages."
Part 2: Defining & Discussion 4 Minutes
"So, why do you think these invisible lines, these personal boundaries, are so important? What happens when someone crosses a boundary? How does it make you feel?"
[Listen to student responses. Guide them towards ideas of discomfort, disrespect, and lack of trust.]
"Exactly! When our boundaries are respected, we feel safe, valued, and comfortable. It builds trust in our relationships. When they're not respected, it can feel really uncomfortable, upsetting, or even make us feel unsafe. It's about showing respect for ourselves and for others."
Part 3: Practical Steps 3 Minutes
"Now, let's think about some practical things we can do to respect boundaries. It's simpler than you might think!"
One big one is to ask first. Before you borrow something, before you get into someone's personal space, or before you share something about them, just ask: 'Is this okay?'
Another is to listen and observe. Pay attention to what people say and also their body language. If someone pulls away or changes the subject, they might be signaling a boundary.
Respect the 'No'. It's okay to say 'no' when you need to, and it's important to accept 'no' when someone else sets a boundary with you.
"We're going to quickly work in small groups or pairs. I'm going to give you some Boundary Scenario Cards. You'll read a scenario and discuss how the people involved can show respect for boundaries, or what they could do if a boundary is crossed."
Part 4: Wrap-up 1 Minute
"Great discussions, everyone! Remember, understanding and respecting personal boundaries is a key part of being a good friend, a good classmate, and a good person. It helps create a positive and respectful environment for all of us."

Physical Touch, belongings, proximity.
Emotional Topics, feelings, tone.
Digital Posts, tagging, private chats.
3
Impact of Respect
Think of a time when someone respected your boundaries . How did that make you feel? What did they do specifically?
4
Impact of Disrespect
Think of a time when someone didn't respect your boundaries . How did that make you feel? What happened?
5
Communicating Boundaries
Why is it sometimes difficult to tell someone, "Please don't do that," or "I'm not comfortable with that"? What prevents us from speaking up?
6
Practicing Respect
What are some easy, practical things we can all do in the classroom or with our friends to show we respect others' boundaries?
Facilitator Tip: If the discussion stalls, share a low-stakes example of your own (e.g., "I don't like when people use my favorite grading pen without asking") to model vulnerability and clarity.
