Sparkling Science Lesson PlanLaboratory Guide Sparkling Science Magic Potion Chemistry Lesson Info 30 Minutes Ages 5-6 (Dreamers) Tier 1 Lesson The "Why" "In this lesson, students will explore the wonders of chemistry by creating magic potions that change colors and fizz. Through hands-on experiments, they will learn about basic chemical reactions. This lesson is important as it introduces young learners to scientific concepts in a fun and engaging way, fostering curiosity and a love for science." Potions Kit Baking soda Vinegar Food coloring Plastic cups Spoons Safety goggles Paper towels Discussion Guide Learning Objective Learn basic chemical reactions through physical observation. ! Instructional Flow 5' Introduction Welcome the students and explain that today they will be scientists exploring the magic of chemistry. Briefly introduce the concept of chemical reactions and how some substances can change when mixed together. 5' Experiment Setup Hand out safety goggles to each student. Distribute the materials: clear plastic cups, baking soda, vinegar, food coloring, and spoons. Explain the safety rules, such as not tasting the materials and being careful with the vinegar. 10' Conducting the Experiment Have the students add a spoonful of baking soda to their cups. Let them choose a food coloring and add a few drops to the baking soda. Slowly pour vinegar into the cup and watch the reaction. The mixture will fizz and change color. Encourage the students to observe and describe what they see. 5' Discussion Gather the students and discuss what happened during the experiment. Explain that the baking soda and vinegar reacted to create a gas called carbon dioxide, which caused the fizzing. Refer to the Discussion Guide for specific questions. 5' Closure Summarize the lesson by reinforcing the concept of chemical reactions. Praise the students for their observations and participation. Encourage them to think about other everyday items that might react in similar ways.
Sparkling Science Discussion GuideDiscussion Guide Sparkling Science Reflection Use these questions to guide the discussion after the experiment, helping students reflect on their observations and understand chemical reactions. 1 What did you see when you mixed the baking soda and vinegar? Facilitation Tip Encourage students to describe the fizzing, the sound it made, and the color change they observed. Use sensory words like "bubbly," "hissing," and "vibrant." 2 Why do you think the mixture fizzed? The Science Guide students to understand that the reaction between baking soda (solid) and vinegar (liquid) creates a gas called carbon dioxide. The bubbles are that gas trying to escape! 3 Can you think of other things that might fizz when mixed together? Real World Connections Help students brainstorm common household items that might react similarly. Examples: lemon juice and baking soda, soda pop being opened, or bath bombs in water. © Wizard Science Academy Lab Notes
Sparkling Science PresentationSparkling Science The Magic of Chemical Reactions Our Mission Today, we are Scientists! We will create Magic Potions to see how things change when they mix together. Safety First! Wear Goggles Protect your scientist eyes! No Tasting Science tools are not for eating! Our Supplies Baking Soda Vinegar Coloring Step 1 The Powder Add one spoonful of Baking Soda to your cup. Is it soft? What color is it? Step 2 The Color Pick your magic color and add a few drops. Stir it up with your spoon! Step 3 The Magic Slowly pour the Vinegar into your cup... Listen closely! What happened? Fizzing Bubbles Color Changing Hissing Sounds The Science Secret When the baking soda and vinegar mix, they make a GAS called... Carbon Dioxide This gas is what makes all those tiny bubbles!
