A BLOCK LONG

One of the first public spaces in the U.S. that was fully integrated. Black and white dancers met on the same floor.

Music never stopped. Battle of the Bands would last all night—Chick Webb vs. Count Basie.

The northeast corner of the floor reserved for the elite "Lindy Hoppers" to innovate.

It offered equal dignity to all dancers, regardless of race, at a time when much of NYC was segregated.
It was a place where working-class people could feel like royalty for the night.
It fostered inter-community respect through skill. Dancers were judged on their ability, not their skin color.

If dance floor integration could happen in 1926, why did it take so much longer for the rest of society to follow suit?
