Probability Playhouse
Teacher Facilitation Guide
Grade Level
1st - 2nd Grade
Duration
45 Minutes
Objective
Students will apply probability vocabulary (will, won't, might) to creative examples.
Materials
Paper, Crayons, Markers, Stapler, Mini-Book Template.
1
Warm-up: The Playground Dino (5 min)
Start with a "think-pair-share" style question to get brains moving.
"Imagine you look out the window right now. Is it possible to see a T-Rex on the playground? Why or why not?"
- Listen for words like "impossible," "never," or "not real."
- Explain that today we are learning fancy math words for how likely things are to happen.
2
Video & Discussion (10 min)
Watch "Will, Won't and Might". Use these pause points for engagement:
Active Participation
Ask students to vote with hand signals:
👍 Will | 👎 Won't | 🫳 Might (shaky hand)
Key Discussion: 1:06 & 1:20
Focus on Orange Juice Rain and Unicorns. Ask: "Why are these 'won't happen'?"
3
The Book of Impossible Things (25 min)
Students will create a 3-page mini-book using the provided template.
Page 1
Will Happen: Something certain (e.g., "The sun will set," "I will eat dinner").
Page 2
Might Happen: Something that could go either way (e.g., "I might wear a blue shirt," "It might rain").
Page 3
Won't Happen: Encourage "Silly Impossible" things (e.g., "Raining donuts," "Pigs flying," "Talking backpacks").
4
Closure (5 min)
Gather on the rug. Ask students to share only their "Won't Happen" page. Celebrate the most creative and silly ideas! Reinforce that "Won't Happen" means it is impossible in the real world.
