Warm-Up: The Norm (5 min)
Use the Rulebreaker Slides to brainstorm mammal traits. Ask: "What makes a dog a dog? What do humans and cats have in common?"
Teacher Note: Focus on fur, milk, and live birth as the 'big three' markers for students.

The Puzzling Platypus (10-15 min)
Hand out the Lab Report Worksheet . Play the video "The Puzzling Platypus" and pause at these key moments:
0:58 Pause: Why did scientists think it was a prank? Discuss classification based on appearance.
1:50 Pause: Introduce "Monotreme." Define it on the board/anchor chart.
3:20 Pause: Ask: "How does it hunt if its eyes/ears are shut?" Discuss Electrolocation.

Students use the Sorting Cards . Here is the expected breakdown for your answer key:

• Platypus: Eggs but milk/fur.
• Bat: Flies but milk/fur.

Closure & Anchor Chart (10 min)
Return to the brainstorm list. Circle traits that "Always" apply and star ones that "Usually" apply. Conclude that nature is diverse and classification is about shared history, not just looks.
