Lesson: Goal Quest New Year Ideation
Grade 5 • 15 Minutes
Mission Objective
To help students who struggle with ideation to identify and commit to 8 meaningful, achievable goals for the new year using a structured "Goal Bank" and a gamified Bingo format.
The 15-Minute Quest Plan
1
The Launch (2 Mins)
"Happy New Year, Explorers! Today we're going on a Goal Quest. A goal is like a map—it helps us get to where we want to be by next December."
Hand out the Goal Quest Bingo sheets and explain that the goal is to fill the board, not just cross things off.
2
Bank Browsing (3 Mins)
Have students read through the Goal Bank. For students who struggle with ideation, encourage them to "Shop" the bank—pick one from each color category first to ensure a balanced set of goals.
3
The Writing Quest (8 Mins)
Students write their chosen goals into the bingo squares. Teacher Tip: If a student is stuck, ask: "What's one thing you want to be better at in Minecraft/Math/Soccer by summertime?"
4
Victory Lap (2 Mins)
Have students circle their one most important goal. If time permits, have them share it with a partner.
Supporting the Struggling Ideator
- The "Pick 2" Strategy: Tell them they MUST pick at least 2 from the bank, and can try to make up 1 of their own. Reducing choice can reduce anxiety.
- Visual Prompts: Point to the icons (rocket, graduation cap, heart) to help them categorize what "kind" of person they want to be this year.
- Small Starts: Remind them that goals don't have to be giant. "Drink more water" is just as valid as "Master long division."
