Lesson: Fraction Rock
Learning Objective
Students will multiply a whole number by a fraction using the "multiply by top, divide by bottom" algorithm, reinforced through rhythmic mnemonic and visual number lines.

1. Warm-up: Anatomy of a Problem
Write "Whole Number" and "Fraction" on the board. Review the roles of the numerator and denominator.
Ask: "What part of the fraction tells us how many pieces we have?" (Numerator) "Which part tells us the total pieces in one whole?" (Denominator)
2. Visual Hook: Numberock Premiere
Watch the "Multiplying Fractions with Whole Numbers Song." Challenge students to listen for the "Catchy Rule."
Rule: "Multiply by the top, divide by the bottom."
3. Deconstruction: The Algorithm
Re-watch 0:12-0:37. Pause to model \(8 \times \frac{3}{4}\) on the board.
- Step A: Multiply the whole number by the numerator (\(8 \times 3 = 24\)).
- Step B: Divide that total by the denominator (\(24 \div 4 = 6\)).
- Step C: Connect to the visual: "The number line was split into 4 parts. We took 3 of those parts."
4. Guided Practice: Music Math
Distribute the Music Math worksheets. Before solving each problem, lead the class in a "Chant and Solve."
"Class, what do we do first?" (Multiply by the top!) "And then?" (Divide by the bottom!)
5. Exit Ticket: The Solo
Students solve \(10 \times \frac{1}{2}\) independently using the song's method. Check for mastery of the two-step process.
Watch Out For:
Students might try to divide the whole number by the numerator or multiply the whole number by the denominator. Reinforce that the "Top" (Numerator) always makes things bigger (multiply), while the "Bottom" (Denominator) breaks them down (divide).
