Grade 5 • Math
Unit: Fraction Division
Learning Objective
Students will be able to model division of a fraction by a unit fraction using visual aids and hands-on measurement tools.
Lab Materials
Measuring cups (1 cup, 1/2, 1/4, 1/8)
Tubs/Containers (to catch spills)
Rice or Water (Rice is often less messy)
Student Worksheet & Slide Deck
Lesson Timeline
5 MIN
Warm-up: The Quarter Connection
Ask: "How many quarters are in a dollar?"
Display: \(1 \div \frac{1}{4} = 4\). Discuss why dividing by a small part results in a larger whole number. This sets the stage for "how many of these fit into that?"
5 MIN
Video: Dividing by Unit Fractions
Watch the "Matholia" video (first minute primarily). Use these pause points:
0:27: Pause. Have students sketch a prediction: "How many \(1/8\) glasses fit into \(1/2\) a bottle?"
0:44: Discuss the rule: Dividing by a unit fraction is the same as multiplying by the denominator.
20 MIN
Hands-on Lab: Pouring Fractions
Students work in pairs at stations with tubs and measuring cups.
Task A
Measure \(\frac{1}{2}\) cup. See how many \(\frac{1}{8}\) cups fill it. (Answer: 4)
Task B
Measure \(\frac{1}{2}\) cup. See how many \(\frac{1}{4}\) cups fill it. (Answer: 2)
10 MIN
Discussion & Closure
Compare physical results with the math rule. Ask: "Why does \(\frac{1}{2} \div \frac{1}{8} = 4\)?". Students write their final explanation on the worksheet.
Teacher Tip: Watch For...
The "Bigger" Illusion
Students often think division should make a number smaller. Emphasize that we are asking "how many tiny pieces fit in here?" which naturally results in more pieces.
Accuracy in Pouring
When using rice, remind students to "level off" the cup for an accurate measurement. If they are slightly over/under, their count might be off by half a cup!

Dividing by a unit fraction is the same as...
Multiplying by the Denominator
\[ \frac{1}{2} \div \frac{1}{8} \Rightarrow \frac{1}{2} \times 8 \]
The Pour Station
1
Measure 1/2 cup of rice and pour it into your tub.
2
Predict: How many 1/8 cups will fill it back up?
3
Test it! Use the 1/8 cup to scoop the rice back. Count out loud!

The Big Question
Why does 1/2 ÷ 1/8 result in a whole number like 4?
Explain it on your worksheet using what you saw at your station!

Prediction Sketch
Video Observation (0:27)
The water bottle is \(\frac{1}{2}\) full. Each glass holds \(\frac{1}{8}\) of a bottle. Predict: How many glasses can we fill?
