Have you ever wondered what makes things bright? It's light! Light is a form of energy that helps us see the world around us. Without light, everything would be completely dark!
Where Does Light Come From?
There are many places where light comes from. We call these light sources . The biggest and most important light source for Earth is the sun . The sun gives us natural light and warmth every day. Other natural light sources include stars and lightning.
But light doesn't just come from nature! We also have artificial light sources , which are made by people. Think about the lamps in your house, flashlights, or even the screen you're reading this on. Candles and campfires also create light.
How Does Light Travel?
Light is a super speedy traveler! It always travels in straight lines , moving away from its source. Imagine drawing a straight line from a light bulb to your eye – that's how light moves! This is why shadows are formed; when something blocks the straight path of light, it creates a dark area.
When light hits an object, it can do different things. Sometimes it bounces off, like a ball bouncing off a wall. This is called reflection .
Reflection is how we see most objects that aren't light sources themselves. The light from a source hits the object, bounces off, and then travels in a straight line to our eyes. Pretty neat, right?
Why is Light Important?
Light is incredibly important! It helps plants grow, which gives us food. It keeps us warm. Most importantly, it allows us to see! We use light to read, play, explore, and do almost everything during the day. At night, we rely on artificial light to continue our activities safely.
So, the next time you see something shining bright, remember the amazing journey of light!
Vocabulary

C. Light reflects off the object and then travels in a straight line to your eyes.
D. Light bends around the object to reach your eyes.
2
The reading explains that shadows are formed because light travels in a straight line. What happens when something blocks the path of light?
A. The light curves around the object.
B. The light changes color.

Answer Key
1
According to the reading, how does light help you see an object that is NOT a light source itself?
Correct Answer: C
Light reflects off the object and then travels in a straight line to your eyes.
Reasoning: The reading states, "Reflection is how we see most objects that aren't light sources themselves. The light from a source hits the object, bounces off, and then travels in a straight line to our eyes."
2
The reading explains that shadows are formed because light travels in a straight line. What happens when something blocks the path of light?
Correct Answer: C
The object creates a dark area where the light cannot reach.
Reasoning: The passage explicitly says, "This is why shadows are formed; when something blocks the straight path of light, it creates a dark area."
3
Imagine a beam of light coming from a flashlight. Based on the reading, what is the best way to describe how this light would reach your eye?
Correct Answer: B
It would travel directly in a straight path to your eye.
Reasoning: The reading states, "Light always travels in straight lines, moving away from its source." This question asks for an application of that concept.
4
Why is reflection important for us to see most things around us, like a book or a table?
Correct Answer: C
Reflection allows light from a source to bounce off the object and into our eyes.
Reasoning: The reading defines reflection as when light "bounces off" an object, and then clarifies that this is "how we see most objects that aren't light sources themselves."
